Sherry Williams

Sherry Williams is the founder and President of Bronzeville / Black Chicagoan Historical Society. In her role as a community activist, she has advocated for more inclusive use of publicly funded spaces. She is currently challenging the use of parking meters at City of Chicago parks and beaches. Williams was a resident historian at the Pullman State Historic Site and the Sen. Stephen A. Douglas Tomb Site from 2009 to 2017. She developed an African Heritage edibles garden at the Sen. Stephen A. Douglas Tomb Site and a bird oasis at both the Pullman and the Douglas locations after recognizing how these spaces did not include culturally competent programs. Williams continues her work at universities, libraries, backyard barbecues, cemeteries, and vacant lots across the city. She is a founding member of the Chicago Cultural Alliance, a member of the Burnham Park Advisory Council,
and the Afro-American Genealogical and Historical Society of Chicago, Inc. On Sept 5, 2020, Williams received more than $7,000 in donations to place a headstone on the grave of Mrs. Nancy Green-the original Aunt Jemima.
