Fire

by Orrin Williams

Fire is a cleansing mechanism. It is an actual force or a metaphorical force. Like Baldwin, the Fire Next Time or like that hot game you played
when those who watched or participated said “you were on fire”...

But now the fires are devastating the land, the dwellings of those
we may not know personally but who we love nonetheless.

The fires have laid bare the smoke and the mirrors on which the American experiment has rested. It has exposed for example that while I live in Illinois with over 25 million acres in production for corn and soybeans,
I/we are reliant on the west coast to provide us food.

How fragile is this balance. Will the fire cleanse us of the unsustainable paradigms that we have existed under, that are threatened with collapse?

What is to be cleansed?
